The Rural Water Supply & Sanitation Department, Karnataka (RWSSD Karnataka) is responsible for supplying drinking water to over 130 villages in a timely and cost-effective manner. The project required the laying of some 600 kilometers of pipeline in rural regions, including during the monsoon season. The project also necessitated the acquisition of land in certain areas, requiring the project team to navigate local statutes and cooperate with local players. RWSSD Karnataka placed a maximum limit on allowed energy consumption, which required a creative energy-saving solution. In addition, RWSSD Karnataka required continuous remote sensing of water flow, pressure and quality parameters.
The project involved the design, build, operate and transfer (DBOT) of a fully automated water scheme. Water is pumped from an intake station at the Renuka Sagar reservoir to a water treatment plant (WTP) with a capacity of 26 ML/day. Treated water is transferred through various pumping stations and several types of balancing reservoirs, creating a reliable and cost-effective gravity-based distribution network. Drinking water is delivered to the highest tank in each of the 131 villages in the Nargund and Ron “talukas” (administrative districts) within the Gadag District of the Karnataka state.
Remote automatic meter reading (AMR), pressure management and water-quality monitoring systems were applied at consumer connections and at various locations along the conveyance system. This online monitoring of water-loss and water-quality events enabled early detection and management of problems, leading to increased revenues and improved service levels.
