The Ghana Water Company chose TAHAL to carry out a turnkey project for the rehabilitation and expansion of water supply systems and the construction of a water treatment plant (WTP). The project serves a population of over 750,000 people in the Accra-Tema Metropolitan Area (ATMA).


In the project’s first stage, TAHAL provided a diverse range of services including preliminary and detailed design, procurement and installation of pipes, fittings and accessories, and procurement of electromechanical equipment and instrumentation. At the second stage, TAHAL constructed a new WTP and reinforced concrete reservoirs, and provided technical assistance in the operation and maintenance of the treatment plant and pumping stations.

Water supply system:

Rehabilitation and expansion of the water supply system included:

  • Supply and laying of transmission mains
  • Reinforcement of concrete storage reservoirs
  • Rehabilitation of existing reservoir
  • Construction of distribution network

Water treatment plant:

Based on direct gravity sand filtration technology, the new and rehabilitated WTPs featured:

  • Chemical and chlorination facilities
  • Pre-chlorination and hydrated lime powder
  • Hydrated lime powder and chlorine gas dosing
  • Alum dosing (as required)
  • Horizontal centrifugal pump
