Hydrogeochemical Model for Pollutant Dispersion in Aquifer

Cliente Mekorot Water Co. Ltd.
Lugar: Israel
Info:

The treatment process in the Dan Region Sewage Reclamation Project comprises principally SAT (Soil Aquifer Treatment), which takes place when treated effluents are recharged to the aquifer through spreading fields.

The model permits determination of the dispersion curves of the principal pollutants detected in the project's observation wells. Pollutants analyzed include chlorides, sulphates, nitrates, sodium, calcium, bicarbonates and pH.

Other pollutants, principally heavy metals, could not be monitored since they had not yet reached the observation wells.

The hydrogeochemical parameters of the aquifer, the retardation coefficient, and the mean disintegration and half life of the pollutants were determined, in addition to the extent of removal in the unsaturated layer.

The pollutant transport model is suitable for analysis of problems of local pollution, especially in cases of radial flow. The model permits highly accurate projections to be made with respect to water quality in the zonal aquifer.
